{on the range} week 5: salty dog

{On the Range} is my weekly series where I discuss what we're doing, reading, and eating. It's a little bit 52 project and other photo projects, and a little bit {Did you Read?} and {In the Ranger Kitchen}.

On the Range
January 29 - February 4, 2013

Milestones

  • When I say "I love you" to Charlie, she responds by patting my arm, batting her long eyelashes at me, and saying "You love me." Or she says "I love my panties." We'll work on her responses.
  • Evidently the boys in class got ahold of Charlie, who now thinks it's hysterical to say "Mommy, my name isn't Charlie, it's poo poo! Haha!" Sigh. For the record, I know she didn't invent the line herself because we don't say 'poo poo' at home.
  • Genevieve suddenly has started trying my patience daily by drawing on her belongings, whether it's a Barbie or her tent. AND she lies about having done it. It drives me bananas. On good advice, I am employing the following punishment: Without emotion, I remove the article of graffiti and weapon of destruction (with loss of privilege in using it for 1 week), remind her about the problems with lying, put her in a time out, and walk away. But it's not working yet! How long must I endure this phase? It seems extreme to remove markers and crayons for longer than a week, and yet I'm sick of scrubbing.

My week

  • I am working toward certification in childbirth education, so I observed a local natural childbirth class this weekend. I enjoyed it and left feeling like I've made a good career choice.
  • As is typical when I focus on myself, I arrived home from the class observation to a mess and struggled for a while to regain balance with the girls and the home.

Moods
  • After twenty rounds of patiently responding to Charlie's incessant question, "Do you know the hokey pokey?"--while trying to make a complicated dinner--I finally broke down and pleaded with her to stop asking me. My response of course triggered giant tears (Charlie is my sensitive kid) and a massive lump of guilt in my gut. I sighed, took a deep breath, hugged her, and attempted to balance the scales by turning on the music to the hokey pokey and dancing with her for a few minutes. Balance was restored, but I am also left with a reminder of how challenging it can be not to sweat the small stuff.
  • I spent all day Saturday at an indoor water park celebrating Vivi's pal's 5th birthday. This in a nutshell describes that experience: O_o
  • After obsessively cleaning the kitchen appliances, I finally retired to the living room to watch the last quarter of the SuperBowl. All I can tell you about the game is that I want one of these!

Media
  • Do you know of the Moth Podcast? It's always fantastic; this episode is a recent favorite. I love that they are normally only 20 minutes long, so even in my hectic household it's easy to listen to one start to finish.
  • According to The Atlantic, "there is more to life than the pursuit of simple happiness."
  • How to dance after losing it all
  • I realize sometimes I'm a never-ending advertisement for NPR, but truth be told, I don't care because it is that good. Here's another great episode of On Point about marriage in the movies. If you love movies, or marriage, it's for you.
  • Speaking of marriage, did you read Jezebel's commentary on recent Atlantic and Fox articles? I recommend the Atlantic article. Fox, not so much, but then you probably knew that.
  • To compliment my focus on a cocktail below, here's a story on Splendid Table about out-of-the-box cocktails (which will forever remind me of Andy Sandburg ala Portlandia)

Meals
  • Chinese Orange Chicken (I have more to say about this meal in another post tomorrow)
  • Slow cooker surprises: I just added the BlogHer TV button at the top. Please give me feedback if you think it's annoying or a bad addition. I get a small income from it--a few bucks, not much--but I actually like it because it is a "food & cooking" channel, so it gives you recipes and ideas instead of selling products. I got sucked into the other day and ended up watching quite a bit. My favorite video was the 5 surprise slow-cooker recipes (including lasagna and cake!). My one frustration is that the video just linked to the general website instead of this specific article, but I went and found it and linked it here if you're interested too.
  • The Salty Dog, a new favorite cocktail (recipe below; inspiration came from the WashPo)

salty dog, with pizazz

3 parts vodka (or local gin if you can find it)
2 parts grapefruit juice
2 parts grapefruit sparkling water/soda*
1 part grapefruit simple syrup (*use less if using a sweetened soda)
ice
salt for glass rim

A salty dog is really supposed to be just vodka, grapefruit juice, and a salted rim (note: it's a "greyhound" if you leave out the salt). I love this drink and think it's fine like that if you're ordering from a bar, but I like to gussy it up when I'm at home.

Grapefruit simple syrup is easy to make. Mix equal parts sugar and water (I like to do a cup each) and the zest of a few grapefruits. Bring to a boil and allow to simmer for a few minutes until the sugar is dissolved. Strain over cheesecloth into a mason jar, chill, and store for up to a few months in the refrigerator.
